My favorite: Lacquered pork (東坡肉). Pork belly stewed with scallions, spices, rice wine, soy sauce, and sugar

I gotta find out where the good shanghainese restaurants are in NYC...I can't live without this dish!

i can take you to a couple if i come back to the city during spring break. fuck the appellate brief that's due the monday after.

i LOVE every single item you posted in this entry. it's so shanghainese. after i screw those rich doctors by winning my big malpractice case, i'm going to cook these dishes every day and eat them slowly over a pot of good tea while chit-chatting with friends.

when will you be back for spring break? I'll be back on 2/15, and my job start on 3/1.

I think shanhainese food is probably my favorite among the Chinese regional cuisines. I still don't really know the clear distinctions, but I think the kind I like are called 本幫菜.

I had pretty good 小笼包 at 上海滩 in Chinatown in NYC. I am not sure where you can get the authentic 东坡肉 in NYC or anywhere in US. Charles?

I can't remember the name, but I recall reading about a new Chinese restaurant in NYC that's got the fancy decor, service, plating, and pricing like those eclectic places. And one of its signature dishes is this pork.

東興樓 in Rego Park (on Queens Blvd.) has very good 本幫菜 and should have 東坡肉. the restaurant is an old establishment that has been there forever. i know that they at least have 走油元蹄. i haven't been to this place for ages mainly because of all the cheaper alternatives that have popped up in flushing in the recent years.

樓外樓, a new 江浙 restaurant in flushing, should also have this dish. i heard they poached most of 大江南北's chefs after 大江南北 closed. 大江南北 used to have really good 醬汁肉.

my parents said that they tried and liked this new shanghai restaurant in chinatown called 老振興. it's probably not new, but new to them since they almost never venture to chinatown.

albert, my spring break is the week of 3/6, so maybe we can get together to try a good restaurant if you have time?

You all are making me hungry! Albert, if you find out the name of that new restaurant, let me know. My problem with most Chinatown restaurants are they are not very appealing on the eye.

Charles: yes, let's definitely go out when you come back to NYC. Supposedly the first month of my job is called the bootcamp training period. (reportedly 80-100hr/wk) But I don't see how I can't squeeze out some dinner time.

The only places I know in Chinatown now are: Joe Shanghai, 老飯店, 楓林閤 (for peking duck), 大旺. That's about it. I'll definitely start to try more...

both of them graduated with honors in law school and are working for very prestigious firms. cornell cheme class of 2000 is kick'in some serious ass in the legal field!

guys, does Joe's Shanghai really have the best Shao Long Bao in Chinatown? Charles, I am not going to flushing, just the Chinatown in Manhattan, so which Shanghainese place should I go?

I am craving Cafeteria's mac & cheese, it's such good comfort food after getting out the club.

Charles: wow! I really did not expect this many people from our class to become lawyers! Damn, had I thought about how much less work time and how much more money my job offers I would have gone to law school too!! (Well, honestly, I can't possibly read and write that much...)

Erica: I don't know if Joe Shanghai is the best. But I haven't had that many meals in NY Chinatown. Why is flushing so damn far!!??
